Our Shanghai office advises new entrants and long-established clients on investment in the PRC, including the establishment and operation of wholly foreign-owned enterprises and joint ventures. Lawyers in the Corporate team, China investment group and the Dispute resolution practice act for international and Chinese business clients on high profile cross-border work, combining on-the-ground expertise with international reach.

We opened our Shanghai office in 2003, making us one of the first international law firms to operate a second office in China. Our team is made up of lawyers and partners who speak Mandarin, Cantonese, English, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Malay, Russian and Shanghainese and work alongside other offices in the network to advise on UK, US and Hong Kong law.

Working in Shanghai

Adjacent to the elegant Bund waterfront area, the Bund Center is a 50-storey complex comprising an office tower, hotel and apartments. It is one of Shanghai’s largest and most modern integrated developments. Shanghai is a prosperous, ambitious and exciting city. A fascinating blend of physical, social and cultural elements of both east and west, it boasts a unique, fast-moving atmosphere based on a rich historic heritage.

As the largest commercial and trade centre in mainland China, Shanghai has become the headquarters of many large international firms. Areas like the Portman Shanghai Centre on Nanjing Xilu, Puxi offer user-friendly convenience for westerners who have relocated to the city. You’ll find a wide choice of food in Shanghai, from Chinese lunchboxes to fine-dining restaurants.

Global Mobility and Client Secondments

As a global organisation we support opportunities for our lawyers to spend time in other offices within our network. Fostering our 'one firm' culture, international secondments are a key way in which we share our expertise, enrich experiences and broaden horizons.

Opportunities to spend time at a client working within their in-house legal team are also common.
