ALT Belfast is at the heart of the firm's strategic drive to offer cutting-edge, technology-led services to its clients. These services are powered by our people – including our talented Trainee Solicitors.

We're looking for the next cohort of high-performing Law graduates, to join our ALT Trainee Solicitor Programme. An interest in the evolution of the legal market, a global commercial outlook, and a commitment to learning are all essential attributes.

Our 2.5-year ALT Trainee Solicitor Programme offers you the chance to work with prestigious international clients as part of a global, collaborative and award-winning team. At the end of the programme, you will qualify as a solicitor under England and Wales Law.

Seat rotation

You will rotate through four seats which will enable you to hone your skills across a range of practice areas, helping you to become a well-rounded solicitor. Your first seat will be 12 months long and the remaining 3 seats will be 6 months long. We offer seats in the following practice areas: Disputes, Corporate, Funds, Finance & Banking, Real Estate & Construction, and Employment, Pensions & Incentives. The programme is flexible, giving you the option to complete all seats in Belfast or to take up the opportunity to experience a seat in our London office.

EDUCATION

We will support your development through the completion of our bespoke development programme called "Accelerate" during your first 12 month seat. This programme includes a range of personal and technical skills modules tailored to reflect ALT business priorities and is delivered in partnership with BPP, one of the UK’s premium Legal Training providers. Following completion of the "Accelerate" programme in your first seat (i.e. during the first 12 months), you will undertake the SQE learning programme part-time during your remaining 3 seats (i.e. over the next 18 months).

ELIGIBILITY

For places on our ALT Trainee Solicitor Programme starting in September 2023, we are looking for final year Law students or those who have already completed their Law degree.

What we look for

An ability to review, analyse and organise documentary and factual evidence, excellent organisational skills with an eye for detail.

We’re looking for consistent 2:1s throughout your degree but we’ll always take mitigating circumstances into account – please include as much detail as you’re comfortable with in the additional information box on the online application form.

Testimonials

“I was fortunate to be selected for secondment to a client's M&A team, which was hugely beneficial for gaining experience in transactional work and project management, as well as giving me the opportunity to work with and benefit from the experience of senior colleagues in the London office, build my professional networks, and develop my confidence by being entrusted to lead on certain transactions.”
Colm Wolinski

“The opportunity to experience different practice areas and work within different teams was a really enjoyable aspect of the training contract. It was also a very valuable experience as it exposed me to different ways of working and enabled me to develop new and existing skills.”
Michael McFall

“I have really enjoyed the opportunity to take on new challenges and to get involved with a diverse range of projects throughout my training contract.

I also have enjoyed the opportunity to complete part of my training contract with the London office. This has provided me with insight into the work carried out by the wider firm and enabled me to connect with others within the wider HSF team.”
Sophie McVea

“The Training Contract was top-tier and a very engaging and rewarding experience, with wide exposure to a variety of high-level work across the firm's Belfast and London offices, mentoring from experienced senior lawyers throughout and a good mixture of vocational and academic learning.”
Jonathan Williams
